Studied the activities of 104 general hospital psychiatric inpatients during their 1st pass (a temporary order to leave the hospital) away from the hospital. Most passes were for 1 day & were requested by the patient rather than by the physician or family. Most Ss used passes to visit their families. More than 20% of the Ss were alone during the pass & more than 10% reported suicidal ideation. (7 refs.)
