161 alcohol-abusing patients who had attempted suicide between 1970-75 were followed up until 1982. The 18 who eventually committed suicide were compared to the nonsuiciders with respect to psychiatric diagnosis, Beck Depression Inventory, Hopelessness Scale, & Suicidal Intent Scale (SIS) scores. Only the SIS precautions subscale differentiated those who did & did not commit suicide: the patients who killed themselves had taken more precautions against discovery in their index attempts. (VM)
