This article discusses the ethics of assisted suicide, with reference to Bruce Bettelheim, Nancy Cruzan, & Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s suicide machine. The author does not pass judgement on the morality of suicide itself – particularly in an age when life can be extended irrationally as in the case of Nancy Cruzan – but she does feel that encouraging another’s suicide is wrong. She is concerned this will promote suicide among the poor or elderly & will hinder research on terminal diseases. (VM)
