There has been growing interest in the role of familial factors in suicidal behaviour. Twin, adoption & family investigations strongly support the hypothesis that genetic factors influence the clustering of suicidal behaviour in families. Other clinical & biological research provide evidence of major differences between patients attempting suicide violently & those who use nonviolent means. Studies showing that familial & genetic factors might play a role in suicidal behaviour are reviewed.
