This paper discusses methodological & ethical issues pertaining to psychological autopsies based on the application of the method to 3 studies of suicide in Sweden & on a review of other investigations. The interviewer should have clinical experience in order to deal with interviewees in grief. A 2-6 mth interval between the suicide & interview is recommended. The survivor’s reactions to the interview should be evaluated in order to expand the empirical base for ethical considerations. (43 refs)
