This letter to the editor criticizes a case series of jail suicides in Florida reported by Copeland (1989). Copeland found that “A young white male offender with a psychotic background” was the most common suicide victim. The present author asserts that the frequencies of these factors in the Florida inmate population is not reported, & so the profile is not of much help. He also notes that the study combines local & federal prison systems, which have different types of inmates. (VM)
