This article discusses the link between suicide risk & substance abuse. The authors assert that understanding more about substance abuse can aid prevention efforts for young adults, since so many suicidal youths abuse drugs. The authors explore the methodological difficulties in accurately estimating suicide risk in this population, the characteristics of users, the types of drugs which carried increased risk, potential mechanisms of action, clinical implications & future research directions.
