This survey is based on an analysis of inquest deaths in Inner North London from 1971-1985. The suicide rate remained fairly constant at about 20 per 100,000, & the sex/age ratio did not show any marked variation. The authors found that 66% of the victims were male & 34% female. Methods employed have changed with a sharp decline in gas deaths, a steady decline in overdose deaths, & increases in all other methods, particularly in deaths by hanging. In 44%, no psychiatric history was found. (VM)
