This brief article responds to reports that the antidepressant, fluoxetine (Prozac), causes suicidal ideation. The criticism comes from a study by Teicher et al. which included only 6 patients, 4 who were also taking other psychotropic medications, & 5 who had previous suicidal ideation. A study by Cooper found fluoxetine was safe even following overdoses of up to 3000 mg. With the great number & variety of people taking the drug, however, there is bound to be some idiosyncratic reactions. (VM)
