This study found that psychotic illness is associated with a balance of 6:1 chromosomal translocation in a 3-generation family. The mother & son carrying the translocation suffer from chronic psychotic illness, & a daughter who was a translocation carrier committed suicide. Her twin daughters, who both are carriers, have not yet reached the age of risk for develping this psychiatric illness, while 2 older members of the family have the translocation & have never had a psychiatric disorder.
