This letter to the editor questions the accuracy of an article by Dr. E. Dooley. The author of the letter feels Dooley’s statistics are incorrect & asserts that prison suicides do not result from mental disorder any more than among the general population. The author concludes that the main reason inmates commit suicide is that they are in jail, & he recommends that fewer people be held on remand, & physical conditions, like overcrowding, should be improved.
