After the suicide of a 3rd yr medical student, the level of concern expressed suggested a need to study the impact on the survivors in more detail. Data from 20 volunteer students identified posttraumatic symptoms lasting over several months. The tendency to identify with the victim was related to the prevalent experience of medical student depression. Specific suggestions are made for immediate crisis management & for preventive intervention strategies within a medical school. (20 refs.)
