Briefly describes the case of a man whom the author had once helped to save from suicide & poverty, & who was later appointed a judge despite his lack of conscience. The author contends that the man’s unscrupulous behaviour would not prevent him from being a capable judge, since he “knew crime from both sides of the bar”.
