This article discusses self-destructive & suicidal behaviours in penal settings from a sociological perspective. A model of Durkheim’s theory of suicide is included. The author argues that hypernomia (over-regulation) in penal settings may be a significant risk factor for suicide in inmates. Suggestions for future research on this relationship are included.
