This paper describes various aspects of bereavement: symptoms & course, predictors of outcome, & treatment. Suicidal thoughts are common after the 1st month. One study reported that survivors of suicide have a greater risk of death than survivors of other deaths. Another said that there is a higher number of suicides among the widowed than the married. The relative risk of suicide is estimated at 2.5 times higher than the general population in the 1st year and 1.5 times higher in the 2nd to 4th.
