Describes 3 factors associated with suicide proneness of psychiatric patients & university students in Transkei: suicidal ideation, feeling abandoned & lack of self-esteem. The findings suggest that suicide wishes are probably more prevalent in the general population than clinical evidence might suggest & that the 2 most important factors associated with high risk are one’s inability to cope with stressful situations & a negative personal attitude toward life.
