613 high-school students were self-assessed on various variables to determine whether gender resulted in differences in the prediction of suicidal ideation. Hopelessness, depression, substance abuse & reasons for living were significant predictors. Males reported more hopelessness, loneliness, and substance abuse than females. Females had more confidence in their ability to cope & a greater fear of death than males. Males had greater fear of social disapproval for having suicidal thoughts.
