In 1988 this author had demonstrated a statistically significant association between suicide & unemployment for both genders in the EEC & Britain between 1974-1986. This paper analyzes whether this link holds true for all the Western world, including the U.S., for the same period. Unemployment appears to be a major factor in the increased levels in the west in the 1974-86 period, especially reactions to long-term unemployment.
