Kushner challenges Durkheim’s assertion that females are more immune to suicide than men. The effect of his theories has meant little research on female suicides has taken place. Traditional interpretations of female suicide has viewed them as a deviation from their expected role & an emotional act. Thus, unlike male suicides, it is not an indicator of social/economic well-being. Failure to consider attempted suicides only exacerbates the belief that suicide is a more common occurrence in men.
