The health care industry employs about 5% of many nation’s workforces but little systematic inquiry has taken place to quantify occupational risks faced by health care workers. Current concerns include evidence that the mortality of some groups in this population is not as favourable as for comparable socio-economic groups. Psychosocial factors & excessive hours of work may explain high suicide rates in some of these groups. New initiatives to investigate & monitor this industry are needed.
