Argues that involuntary mental hospitalization be abolished in the case of suicidal persons because individual liberty, dignity & responsibility should be more highly valued than mental health or coercive suicide prevention. The present author rejects the proposition that suicide is a symptom of mental illness or is caused by mental illness & the legitimacy of the psychiatrist’s special privileges & powers with regard to suicidal persons. 2 refs.
