This study examines the problem of self-poisoning in Cork, Ireland. The authors assert that this is a serious problem which is associated with a deprived environment, local authority housing, unemployment, interpersonal stress, & child neglect. The level of educational achievements in the high-rated wards is low, & young people may feel powerless. The authors conclude self-poisoning occurs more frequently in areas of social deprivation & disorganization. (VM)
