Unemployment and Mortality in Italy: the Turin Longitudinal Study (IN: Current Research on Suicide and Parasuicide, ed. by S D Platt and N Kreitman)
Costa G~~Crepet P~~Florenzano F
This study analyzes the association between suicide & unempolyment in the Italian city of Turin. Of the 13,462 unemployed males (aged 15-59) studied, mortality rates were twice as high as expected. The increased rate does not appear to be due to those who are unemployed because of ill health. The risk increases as umemployment is protracted, & this cannot be attributed to the age & social class that distinguish the unemployed from the rest of the population. (VM)
