Poor correctional design & layout have contributed to many jail suicides, & the ability to supervise inmates adequately is greatly affected by institutional design & the circulation patterns of staff & inmates. Due to difficulties in officer supervision, the promotion of isolation, & safety concerns, the linear style of many older jails may make it more difficult to reduce environmental factors that encourage suicidal actions. Recommendations for the design of jail environments are presented.
