The New York State Model Suicide Prevention Training Program for Local Corrections Officers

A training program developed to enable correctional officers to identify & manage suicidal & seriously mentally ill inmates is described. The program used 4 components leading to certification. The 10 content areas in the curriculum focus on specific information & skills needed to respond effectively to suicidal detainees. A team approach to training offers a flexible & expanded view of the material & enhances understanding & cooperation between mental health & correctional staff. (MM)
