Discusses suicide prevention screening guidelines developed by New York state. Guidelines are designed to isolate high-risk factors & are based on self-reports by detainees at the time of booking. The accuracy & usefulness of the guidelines are maximized by limiting their predictive span to 72 hours & including the interaction of the inmate & the correctional environment in assessment. Repeated administration of a form containing the guidelines reminds personnel to watch for suicide attempts.
