The author of this article asserts that the best way for students to learn suicide prevention is through an internship in a hospital-based crisis intervention service. This gives students practical knowledge in assessing high & low risk, & acute & chronic risk patients. This judgement is critical, especially currently, when health care has moved away from inpatient care & towards cost-effectiveness. A program at a medical centre in Minneapolis is described. (VM)
