Reports a 10-year follow-up study of the mortality of 460 patients with eating disorders. Crude mortality rates were 3.3% & 3.1% in the anorexia & bulimia groups respectively. Standardized rates demonstrated a six-fold increase in mortality in the anorexia group. The most common cause of death in this group was suicide, with the risk of death remaining high for at least 8 years after initial assessment. (13 ref)
