This study describes a population of 80 general hospital patients whose behavioural management required the use of constant observation. Types of patients placed on constant observation included people who had medically complicated suicide attempts. The majority of these patients had no previous psychiatric history. The clinical data provide a basis for policy development & recommendations for the financial & medico-legal management of this population. (20 refs.)
