Substance abusing patients with psychiatric disorders can present unique vulnerabilities for treatment professionals. The tendency to treat chemical dependency patients uniformly can militate against the individualized treatment planning that satisfies legal obligations to act in the best interest of the patient. Various legally vulnerable areas are discussed including the issue of suicide risk, & case histories are provided. 12 refs.
