Rates of suicide using car exhaust from 1950-84 were obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics. 2,101 persons used car exhaust in 1970, 1,998 used it in 1980 to commit suicide. The rates of men & women committing suicide by using car exhaust responded differently to the imposition of emission controls on cars. The male rate dropped immediately whereas that of females continued to rise. Eventually both rates dropped until the early 80s whereupon they began to rise again slightly.
