Considers 2 main reasons for suicidal behavior: self-destruction (SD) and a cry for help (CH). SD is a result of inhibited aggression; the psychodynamic model based on Freud’s throy proposing a relationship btwn suicidality, depression & self-aggression. Farberow & Shneidman (1961) pointed out that besides self-aggression, the CH is the most important psychopathological aspect of suicidal behavior. CH is a nonverbal attempt to show one’s helplessness when verbal communication is not effective.
