Presents 3 case histories of completed suicide in psychiatric inpatients & discusses the immediate & long-range effects of patient suicide on nursing staff. Recommendations include the need for a hospital administrator to be present when the suicide is reported; a staff meeting to discuss the event; discussion of the suicide with patients; a memorial service for staff & patients; follow-up staff debriefing meetings; & a psychological autopsy including staff participation.
