Caustic Injury of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract in Adults: a Clinical and Endoscopic Study

Discusses treatment of 34 adults admitted for ingestion of caustic materials. Ingested agents included hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, strong alkali, bleach, detergent, & ammonia. Each patient underwent fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation. The extent & severity of the injury varied according to the ingested agent & treatment varied accordingly. (16 ref)
