Forms of insulin misuse other than noncompliance have been reported in the literature on the treatment of diabetes mellitus. They include attempted & completed suicide, factitious hypoglycemia, Munchausen syndrome by proxy, & the use of insulin by substance abusers. Recommendations for treatment are discussed for clinicians & investigators regarding this overlooked problem. (70 ref)
