To establish whether a correlation exists between unemployment & suicide, trends in both among men in Scotland were studied from 1976-86. Both rates increased rapidly in the late 1970’s & more slowly after 1982. Among women the rate of unemployment followed a similar pattern but there was a decline in the suicide rate. Findings do not support the hypothesis that the rise in unemployment is a direct cause of the rise in suicide rates among men. (13 ref)
