This article describes an evaluation of the factors associated with major depressive disorder in an inpatient group of 20 primary male alcoholics. Clinical measures more often found in the depressed group included physiologic dependence/withdrawal & alcohol-related cognitive abnormalities. These findings suggest that depression in primary alcoholics seeking treatment is difficult to distinguish from physiological dependence & may be best to consider an organic affective disorder. (CM)
