National rates of suicide in the black population, 1950-1981, are given. Studies of attempted & completed suicide in several cities & methodological problems are discussed. Proposed theories of black suicide are reviewed. Specific primary, secondary, & tertiary prevention strategies are suggested based upon a summary of the characteristics of black suicide attempters reported in the literture. (CM)
