90 adol. admitted to hospital after deliberate drug overdoses were studied. Underlying risk factors, inpatient assessment & treatment offered each patient were recorded. Longer term outcomes were assessed with emphasis on psych & related disorders. 3/4 of the patients had psych eval. during admission & 55% of these were referred for further treatment. Over half of these withdrew from treatment. 12% took a further drug overdose. Results suggest that success is limited by poor patient compliance.
