Of 112 adults admitted to a surgical ward due to accidental injuries 37% had a psychiatric disorder on admission & 21% had a personality disorder. Substance abuse/dependence & antisocial personality disorders were most frequent. Persons with personality disorder were distressed significantly more often & had sustained more severe injuries. No support could be found for a hypothesis of accidental injury being the result of hidden self-destructive tendencies.
