General & case-specific mortality was studied in 4872 patients admitted to a Swedish clinic for people with alcohol problems during 1962-81. The cohort was followed until March 1983. There were 1,141 deaths among males, including 98 suicides & another 46 deaths classified as uncertain suicides or accidents. 21 females died by suicide & 31 deaths were ruled uncertain suicides or accidents. The high suicide rate in both genders indicates a strong relationship between alcoholism & suicide.
