Suicide risk assessment of psychiatric patients is examined including discussion of the contribution of psychosocial stressors, personality & cognitive style, intercurrent medical illness, & specific psychiatric syndromes to suicidal risk. Current knowledge is applied to suicide prevention through empirically based psychiatric treatment of high risk patients & indications for psychiatric inpatient treatment are given. The effectiveness of treatment in reducing suicide risk is examined. 265 refs.
