This article provides a brief overview of the science calledsuicidology. From theory & treatment to the psychological & preventive aspects of suicide, the author conveys great optimism as new developments occur in each of these areas. Moving away from the complexity of a science of suicide into a more basic element, empathy is discussed & defined as a personal willingness & commitment to understand the despair a suicidal person is feeling. Without empathy, scientific approaches become useless.
