Compared results on the Beck Depression Inventory obtained from bulimic females and a control group. Bulimics were more depressed & had greater scores for body image distortion, self-dislike, & self-blame. Although significantly greater than for controls, sucidal ideation was the bulimics’ lowest score, indicating a wish to flee, rather than to attempt suicide. It is proposed that a college environment may exacerbate distorted thinking & bulimia, & that cognitive-based therapy may be effective.
