A widow’s account of her husband’s sudden onset of severe depression after retirement, ending in suicide unsuspected by his family & mental health professionals, & her reactions to his death are summarized. She emphasizes educating relatives about depression & suicide, & criticises the profession for inadequate education & not allowing her participation in his treatment. A survey of members of 5 survivor groups supported most of her points. Some therapeutic issues of survivors are outlined. (KM)
