56 suicide attempters & 248 acutely ill patients, aged 13-19, were administered the Offer Self-Image Scale, Coddington Life Events Scale for Adolescents, & the National Institute of Drug Abuse Questionnaire for Adolescents. Low self-image, recent stress, alcohol & drug use, but not parental loss, demonstrated an association with attempted suicide. Also more common in the suicidal group were runaway behaviours, school failures, & previous attempts. (RM)
