231 children (6 to 18 years) referred for psychiatric treatment were assessed using a structured interview. A hierarchy of suicidal ideation was derived. Depression & its symptoms correlated with suicidal ideation & distinguished those who made attempts, though with overlap between attempters & ideators. Parents & children showed low agreement but high consistency for ratings of suicidality. The continuity of suicidal ideation & suicidal behaviour is explored. (32 refs.) (RM)
