Epidemiology of suicide in the U.S. is discussed. Age, ethnic & cultural differences in incidence are demonstrated. The phenomenon of cluster suicide is described & possible explanations for it are discussed. Neurochemical factors related to suicide are outlined. Preliminary results from a current psychological autopsy study on consecutive adolescent suicides in New York metropolitan area are presented. Family history data & diagnostic profiles of completed suicide are emphasized. (48 refs)
