In this summary, panelists review studies supporting the imitation hypothesis (Phillips, Schmidke, Gould & Shaffer) & others that refute it (Milavsky, Berman); discuss the media’s response to these research findings, & the difficulty with media regulation e.g. too much caution may inhibit TV’s positive contribution. Although there is ambiguity about the measurable impact of media treatment of suicide on people at risk, voluntary guidelines are desirable. (GW)
