In this summarized paper, Lester discusses his social learning theory of suicidal behavior using the case of Ernest Hemingway’s younger brother, Leicester as an example. Leicester’s father, Ernest, & Leicester all shot themselves when they were depressed & suffering from diabetes. Even if we grant the possibility of a genetic predisposition to depression, Leicester appears to have modelled his life on Ernest’s up to, & including, his suicide by the same means. (GW)
